AUSTIN – This May, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is celebrating National Foster Care Month. The monthlong campaign highlights the successes of foster youth and the dedication of those who support them.

“It’s incredibly important that we recognize National Foster Care Month as it highlights the remarkable resilience of youth in foster care,” said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. “TWC is committed to providing resources that unlock opportunities and empower these young Texans to achieve their personal and professional goals.”

Many young Texans face significant challenges to employment when they age out of foster care. To help them overcome these challenges, TWC offers resources through Workforce Solutions offices and specialized foster youth transition centers. These services help young adults build skills, access training, and explore career paths. In recognition of this year’s National Foster Care Month, TWC is also hosting a special Foster Youth Webinar Series.

“Make no mistake, getting our young Texans access to the right education, training, and meaningful job opportunities to succeed in the workforce is a top priority for the Texas Workforce Commission,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III. “That's why, with programs like our Foster Youth Webinar Series, we're making sure we raise awareness for this vital part of our population and secure a brighter future for them.”

Throughout May, TWC’s weekly webinars will address topics relevant to those in foster care and the people who help them. During each session, an expert speaker will share their knowledge about the unique challenges and opportunities facing this part of the population.

“Texas is stronger when foster youth succeed, as their achievements contribute to the long-term prosperity and well-being of our communities,” said TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett. “When we provide these resilient young adults with resources and opportunities to pursue their personal and professional goals, we empower them to build a bright future for themselves and for Texas.”

The Foster Youth Webinar sessions will take place each Wednesday in May from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Here's a glimpse of what participants can expect:

  • May 6: Dr. Karen Harvey – Post-Traumatic Growth for Foster Care Alumni
