It’s cool to be in manufacturing! That was the message delivered to nearly 200 high school juniors from Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties on February 12, 2020 at the Nacogdoches Exposition and Civic Center.

The East Texas Manufacturing Alliance, which includes over 75 companies in the region, hosted Manufacturing Day to inspire the students to consider careers that are in high demand near their home towns and families.

Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas supported the event with the assistance of TWC’s Careers in Texas Industries initiative to encourage students to explore careers in growing Texas Industry Clusters and help students, parents and educators understand in-demand industries through networking with industry professionals and internship opportunities.

Mark Durand, Executive Director of Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas, noted that there over 600 employers in the manufacturing, construction and transportation industries in Deep East Texas, and that many of those occupations are expected to see growth over the next 6 years. Mr. Durand also summarized that there are training assistance opportunities available to eligible youth and invited them to explore their individual needs further by talking with a workforce customer service representative.

During Manufacturing Day, the students heard from recent graduates working in manufacturing careers. They also talked with representatives from 26 firms and were able to put their hands on some of the equipment used and products produced in the area. The region’s colleges, Angelina College and Stephen F. Austin State University, were on site talking about available training and education.
