Spotlight on Success: Javonne, Business Engagement Support
Workforce Challenge
After earning his bachelor’s degree in Education, Javonne was excited to begin his career as a teacher. He worked hard through college, balancing classes, and a part-time job, but when graduation arrived, Javonne faced an unexpected challenge in that finding a full-time job was more difficult than he imagined. For months, he visited the Jasper Workforce Center to job search and fill out applications for local school districts that were hiring, only to face rejections or hear nothing back at all.
Workforce Solution
WSDET Business Engagement Specialist Shanna noticed Javonne visiting the office daily to utilize the resource room computers to job search. After inquiring about Javonne's interests and goals, he expressed that he had a degree and desired to enter the education field as a teacher. Javonne and Shanna reviewed his workintexas.com account and continued the job search. Weeks went by, and he was getting interviews but not hearing back. Javonne was feeling very discouraged because he had the necessary qualifications, but local schools would not give him a chance. Shanna had a Job Development table set up in the resource room, ready for the next time that Javonne came into the Jasper office. Javonne arrived as expected and expressed that he wanted to apply for a job in Beaumont. Shanna helped him apply for the open teacher position there, and within the week, Javonne received a call for an interview.
Result
Javonne secured his interview date and time, but was concerned about limited internet access at home. Shanna told Javonne that he could come to the Workforce office to participate in his Zoom interview. Javonne arrived at the office 30 minutes prior his interview to ensure he was set and ready when Beaumont welcomed him in on the Zoom call. Javonne completed his interview, and before the end of the day, Beaumont called him back and expressed that they would love for him to be apart of their school district. Javonne excitedly accepted the position and is now a 5th grade history teacher.
Congratulations on your success, Javonne! We wish you the best in your career as an educator!
