Spotlight on Success: Michael, WIOA Foster Youth
Michael, a foster care alumnus, first visited the Nacogdoches Workforce Center on January 31, 2025, seeking assistance in obtaining full-time employment. During his initial visit, Michael was introduced to the WIOA Youth Program and was determined eligible for services as a foster youth.
After enrollment, Michael worked closely with his WIOA Youth Case Manager, Tanya Agnew to develop his employability skills. He successfully completed several workforce development activities, including Soft Skills Training, Resume Development, Financial Literacy, and IQ Workshops. Upon completion of these preparatory services, Michael transitioned into a Work Experience placement with the Boys & Girls Club, where he gained valuable hands-on work experience.
Following his work experience, Michael relocated to Longview, Texas, where he secured employment with Zaxby's and worked there for several months. He has since moved to Tyler, Texas, and continues to pursue personal and professional growth.
Michael's early life was marked by the challenges of foster care and homelessness. Despite these hardships, he developed remarkable resilience and a passion for advocating for others whose voices often go unheard. Guided by his values of honesty, integrity, and service to others, Michael strives to make a positive impact in his community. Outside of work, he enjoys writing, floral design, and spending time outdoors. He also has a deep appreciation for nature, particularly unique and lesser-known animals.
On July 14-15, 2026, Michael attended the Foster Youth Conference in Dallas, where he participated as a panelist alongside other young adults who had experienced similar life challenges. Michael represented himself exceptionally well, sharing his experiences and insights with conference attendees. His contributions were so impactful that Texas Workforce Commission staff invited him to participate in a workgroup focused on improving the WIOA service delivery process for foster youth.
Michael's journey reflects perseverance, growth, and a commitment to helping others. He is now preparing to begin a new position with Goodwill Industries in the coming weeks, an exciting step forward in his career path and continued success.
